HIstory of Lahore

Lahore is a modern city of Pakistan which is well known for the delicious food served and the hospitable nature of the people. It is the largest city of Punjab and is enriched with ancient architecture. People come here for the food and to witness the places here.
  
Lahore was named after Lava, son of the Hindu god Rama and it is said that he founded the city. Famous Chinese traveler Yowang Chowang has said that the city Lahore was the great city of Bahamans. Lahore was called by different names in ancient times. Hazrat Data Gunj Buksh who died in Lahore has also mentioned the city Lahore in his book “Kashf-ul-Maajuub” but on the other hand An Iranian scholar “Tahir Marozi” has mentioned Lahore as “Laha-wr”.

The city was the capital of Ghaznavid dynasty from 1163 to 1186 and then it came under the custody of the Turkic conqueror Timur. When the Mughal emperor died the city became a subject of war between Sikhs and Mughals. Lahore became the capital of West Punjab province; in 1955 and it was made the capital of the newly created West Pakistan province, which was reconstituted as Punjab province in 1970.
